What survives a business-record export?

A dated comparison of six software export and migration routes, their documented limits, and the questions to resolve before describing a company dataset.

THE SHORT ANSWER

An export can preserve a selected view of business records while omitting conversation content, relationships or earlier edits. The route matters. This review compares official documentation for six systems; it does not test exports or assess rights to share the records.

  • Name the exact export or migration route before describing what a file contains.
  • Keep documented product behavior separate from what your own account actually retains.
  • A usable export is not a licensing decision. An initial Origin conversation requires no records or system access.

What we reviewed

Origin Data Partners reviewed official documentation for Slack, Notion, Zendesk, Intercom, Jira Cloud and GitHub on September 27, 2026. This is an original comparison of six selected system/route pairs across support, knowledge and engineering workflows, not a representative survey or a ranking of products.

We read seven primary pages, including Notion’s general export guide. For each route, we recorded the documented content, a boundary and a question for the company’s internal reviewer. We did not access customer accounts, execute exports or inspect private records. GitHub’s enterprise migration route is included as a contrast to file exports; its behavior should not be generalized to every GitHub export method.

Download the complete six-row evidence table. It includes the route, source section and check date for every observation.

Six routes and the questions they leave open

The documented boundary is a fact reported by the provider. The final column is Origin’s suggested review question.

System and routeDocumented contentDocumented boundaryQuestion to resolve
Slack — Workspace public-channel export; Free and ProMessages and file links in JSON.Private conversations use different permissions and routes; Free file links cover only the last 90 days.Which conversations, dates and linked files does our authorized route actually cover?
Notion — Relational database CSVRelation values become text URLs.Re-importing the CSV does not reconstruct database relations.Do we need readable references, working relations, or both?
Zendesk — Account CSV and JSON exportThe CSV is ticket data; JSON is a different export route.CSV omits comments and descriptions. JSON omits comments on tickets over 1 MB and reports those exceptions separately. Are conversation content and exception files included in our review?
Intercom — Conversation reporting CSVReporting fields, identifiers and metrics.Reporting CSV excludes full message content; the documentation directs content exports to other methods. Are we describing reporting rows or the actual conversation history?
Jira Cloud — Search-result CSVChoice of all, current or filter fields. The search and field selection define the exported view.Which query and field selection produced this file?
GitHub — Enterprise Importer; Enterprise Server to Enterprise CloudA version-dependent migration of repository data. The documented exclusions include audit logs and edit history of issue and pull-request comments.Which history and relationships require separate review for this migration route?

A file count cannot answer a scope question

The comparison points to three different questions: whether the file contains the content you mean, whether connections between records remain useful, and which time range or earlier versions it covers. These questions follow from the selected documentation; they are not measured failure rates.

A reporting export can be suitable for reporting without containing the history needed to understand a resolved problem. A URL can preserve a reference without reconstructing the relationship in another system. A filtered view can be intentional and useful. Record the purpose alongside the file format so the next reviewer can judge the right thing.

Describe one workflow before requesting an export

Pick one workflow your team recognizes, such as support request → engineering investigation → decision → updated procedure. Keep the records in their systems while describing the categories.

  • Name the system, exact route, date filter and field selection.
  • Ask the responsible team which content, linked files, relationships and earlier edits are retained. Mark unchecked facts as unknown.
  • Separate what the provider documents from what your own account has verified.
  • Assign a reviewer for each rights, privacy, confidentiality or proposed-use question before any sharing decision.
  • Use the inventory template and review checklist to record category-level notes.

Limits, responsibility and corrections

This small purposive sample does not establish how often companies lose information, which system is best, or whether any records can be licensed. Other methods and account settings may change the result. Export capability does not resolve ownership, permitted uses or buyer interest.

Origin is an independent company-data licensing referral business and publishes this comparison as a practical preparation resource. The analysis was prepared with AI assistance and checked against the cited documentation; it has not received independent specialist review. The named software providers have not endorsed Origin.
