Short answer

Most construction business owners make somewhere between about $30,000 and $150,000 a year, and the best predictor is sales volume. A widely used rule of thumb from Markup and Profit is that an owner should be paid about 8% to 10% of annual sales, plus wages for any field work. Contractors in CFMA's 2025 benchmark averaged a 6.7% pre-tax net margin, and BLS puts the median construction manager wage at $114,990, a useful comparison for owners who run projects.

  • Rule of thumb: owner salary of about 8% to 10% of sales, plus field wages and any sales commission.
  • Contractors averaged a 6.7% pre-tax net margin in CFMA's 2025 Benchmarker; general contractors 4.4%, specialty trades 7.7%.
  • Construction managers earned a median of $114,990 in May 2025, and 38% of them are self-employed (BLS).

How much does a construction business owner make?

There is no single reliable average, because "construction owner" covers a one-person remodeler and a firm with $50 million of contracts. Salary aggregators publish figures from roughly $60,000 to $130,000, but they mix owners with employed managers. Two better anchors are a pay rule tied to sales and the margins contractors actually report.

Markup and Profit, a long-running contractor pricing resource, suggests an owner in business under four or five years be paid about 8% of total sales, rising to about 10% as the company matures, on top of wages for field work. At $350,000 of sales that is $28,000; at $740,000 it is $59,200.

The BLS reports a median of $114,990 for construction managers in May 2025, and 38% of construction managers are self-employed, which means many of them are owners. An owner who runs projects full time and earns well below that figure is either underpricing or still building volume.

What profit margin does a construction company make?

CFMA's 2025 Construction Financial Benchmarker, summarised by Bridgit, reports an average 6.7% pre-tax net margin across 1,558 contractors for fiscal 2024. Commercial general contractors and construction managers earned 4.4%, specialty trades 7.7%, heavy civil 8.3%, and the top quarter of all contractors 12.0%.

Those are company profits after the owner's salary is counted as a cost. So an owner of a healthy firm gets paid twice: a salary for the work, and profit for the risk. Owners who skip the salary and call all profit "pay" usually understate what the business really earns.

How do construction company owners pay themselves?

Most combine a wage with profit taken later in the year once job costs are known. Structure decides the taxes:

  • Sole proprietor or single-member LLC: there is no salary. The profit is your income, you take draws when cash allows, and you pay self-employment tax on it. The IRS puts that rate at 15.3%.
  • Partnership or multi-member LLC: the IRS says partners are not employees and should not get a W-2. You are paid through fixed partner payments set in the partnership agreement plus your share of profit.
  • S corporation: if you work in the business you must take reasonable compensation as W-2 wages before taking distributions. What comparable businesses pay for similar work is one of the factors the IRS lists.

How can a construction business owner make more?

What moves owner income in construction:

  • Set markup to cover overhead and profit, not just job costs. Low margins usually come from missing overhead in bids.
  • Bill change orders as they happen.
  • Keep crews busy between projects with service or small jobs.
  • Track estimated against actual cost on every job and fix the categories that run over.
  • Add income from work crews already do (below).

Amelia Robotics lists construction among its top priorities. It pays businesses for approved first-person recordings of real tasks, like framing, drywall, tile or finish carpentry, filmed with a phone on a head mount. Amelia's typical pay is $500 to $2,000 a month per recording employee, assuming 12.5 to 50 approved hours a week; earnings vary, and your agreement and the approved recordings decide what is actually paid.

Illustrative example for a six-person crew recording part of its week: 6 crew members x 15 approved hours a week x 4 weeks x $10 = $3,600 a month, or $43,200 a year, at the typical rate. Amelia pays the business once a month with a statement, and you decide how much to share with the people who record.

At CFMA's 6.7% average margin, $43,200 a year equals the profit on about $640,000 of extra contracts. You agree which sites and tasks are recorded, and client sites can be left out. More on how this works for construction crews and why robot makers want this footage.
