Shift is a real, well-funded app: it is the data collection arm of microagi, a Munich company that raised a $55 million seed round in July 2026. It pays people and businesses for accepted first-person video of hands-on work, claims up to $20 an hour for workplace footage, told Business Insider participants can earn up to $30 an hour, and says it has paid out more than $10 million. The catches: those are maximums, only accepted hours are paid, its US iPhone app is rated 2.6 from 40 ratings, recorders assign all rights in their footage to Shift, and privacy experts criticized its free-cleaning-for-footage offer.
- Legit and funded: microagi raised $55 million in July 2026, led by Hummingbird.
- Pay is "up to": $20 an hour for workplace footage on its site, up to $30 an hour per Business Insider, accepted hours only.
- Payment: accepted earnings go to an in-app balance; US terms promise weekly wire transfers.
- Rights: recorders assign all rights in their footage to Shift, which may license it to other labs.
- For a business: Shift's ceiling is higher than Amelia's $10 example, but Amelia publishes a monthly payment model and a range per employee.
Is the Shift app legit?
Yes. Shift is run by microagi, a robotics data company whose $55 million seed round was announced by the company and reported by TNW and Semafor. It has been covered by Business Insider, the BBC and Fast Company, and it says it has paid out more than $10 million to recorders.
Legit is not the same as easy money. Shift's rates are maximums, only accepted footage is paid, and its US iPhone app is rated 2.6 from 40 ratings, with reviewers complaining about support and slow withdrawals. Its Android app shows more than 50,000 downloads.
If you own a business, the bigger questions are the business rate and who owns the footage, covered below. If your business also holds records such as job files or estimates, see what your data is worth.
What is Shift (joinshift) and who runs it?
Shift, at joinshift.org, is an app that pays people to record first-person video of hands-on tasks with a phone in a headset, then sells accepted footage to AI and robotics labs. It is the data collection arm of microagi, whose chief executive, Bercan Kilic, is a former Red Bull Racing aerodynamicist. The iPhone app is published by MicroAGI, Inc., and US recorders contract with Shift App US LLC, a Delaware company, under its operator terms.
Shift became widely known in 2026 for offering free apartment cleanings, and later free private chefs in San Francisco, in exchange for recording the work. TNW reported in July 2026 that it operated in 15 countries and paid more than 20,000 people; by October it told Business Insider it paid more than 35,000.
How much funding does Shift have?
Shift's parent, microagi, raised a $55 million seed round in July 2026, which it called the largest seed round in German history. Hummingbird led, with Northzone, LocalGlobe, Village Global and redalpine taking part. The valuation was not disclosed.
TNW reported that the money would go on compute, expanding Shift's network and a US presence run from New York, and that microagi employed 37 people and Shift about 75. Funding does not set pay rates, but it does mean a known, backed company stands behind the app.
How much does the Shift app pay?
Shift publishes ceilings and examples rather than a rate card. Rates vary by task and apply only to accepted hours.
| What | Claimed or reported pay | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Workplace, job-site and outdoor footage | Up to $20 per accepted hour | Shift, July 2026 |
| All participants | Up to $30 an hour (Shift's statement) | Business Insider, Oct 2026 |
| Homepage worked example | 5 hours recorded, 4 accepted, $120 | Shift homepage |
| Private chef in San Francisco | His usual rate of $100 to $150 per person | Business Insider, Oct 2026 |
| Total paid out | $10 million+ (homepage); about $10 million in 2026 (Business Insider) | Shift homepage |
How does Shift pay you?
Once submissions are accepted, earnings go to your balance in the app, and you withdraw to a linked bank account. Shift's US terms say payments are made weekly by wire transfer through its payment vendor, and that Shift may withhold pay for rejected, duplicated or non-compliant footage. US contractors paid more than $600 a year fill in a W-9.
There is one important exception. If you record as an employee or contractor of a business that has signed with Shift, the terms say your pay is strictly between you and that business, and Shift owes you nothing directly. Workers at partner businesses should agree their share with the owner in writing.

Does Shift pay business owners?
Yes. Shift's page for hands-on business owners says it pays up to $20 per hour for footage of everyday work in construction, maintenance, repairs, cleaning, landscaping, agriculture, automotive work, electronics repair, retail and food service. It asks the owner to name one person to decide which employees take part, which tasks and areas are approved, and how customer privacy, confidential documents and safety are handled.
Shift says this is not a promise of a fixed number of recording hours. The business agreement is not public, so ask for the rate per accepted hour, the payment schedule, what counts as accepted and what rights the business keeps. Shift told Business Insider that participation is voluntary and that some employees at partner businesses choose not to take part.
What are the privacy concerns with Shift?
Shift's free-cleaning offer drew criticism. Fast Company described it as customers trading intimate data from their homes for a free clean, with the footage licensed to train household robots. A director at the Electronic Privacy Information Center told the BBC it was "a diabolically creative way to sell privacy invasion". Shift's founder told the BBC it was the most honest platform about what happens to your data.
On rights, Shift's US terms say recorders unconditionally assign all rights in their recordings to Shift, and Shift told Business Insider that footage may be licensed to other labs. On privacy, its homepage says faces and personal information are blurred, the original video is deleted after processing, and no audio is recorded unless disclosed. Recorders must not film children, payment cards, passwords or other sensitive material.
Shift vs Amelia: which is better for a business?
Both pay a business for its crew's approved footage. Shift has the higher ceiling and far more funding and press; Amelia publishes a clearer monthly model. Origin may be paid by Amelia when a business it introduces is paid, so weigh this comparison with that in mind and check both sets of terms. For more programs, see business video programs compared.
