Short answer

Most owners of small and mid-size hotels take home roughly $40,000 to $105,000 a year; Glassdoor-based figures cited by Epos Now put the average at $62,000 to $105,000 for 2026. Big hotels can earn far more, but owner income depends less on revenue than on debt: CBRE's 2025 sample kept 34.8% of revenue as gross operating profit and 22.8% as EBITDA, and the mortgage, franchise fees and repairs come out of that before the owner is paid.

  • Glassdoor-based averages put hotel owner pay at $62,000 to $105,000; budget properties sit lower, upscale ones far higher.
  • CBRE's 2025 sample: 34.8% gross operating profit margin, 22.8% EBITDA margin, both before debt service.
  • Employed lodging managers earned a median of $69,250 in May 2025, and 21% are self-employed (BLS).

How much does a hotel owner make?

Epos Now cites Glassdoor figures for 2026 putting the average hotel owner salary between $62,000 and $105,000. Glassdoor is a salary aggregator, so this reflects reported pay of people with "owner" titles, often owner-operators of small properties. It also suggests budget hotel owners earn around $40,000 to $50,000 and upscale or boutique owners $100,000 to $250,000.

The BLS gives a comparison: lodging managers earned a median of $69,250 in May 2025, with the lowest 10% under $40,070 and the top 10% over $128,880. About 21% of lodging managers are self-employed, many of them running a motel or inn they own.

What profit margin does a hotel make?

CBRE reports that gross operating profit margins in its US sample slipped from 35.1% in 2024 to 34.8% in 2025, and EBITDA margins from 23.3% to 22.8%. A different dataset, HotelData.com, showed GOP rising from 37.2% to 38.3%. The two samples include different hotel types, which is why they disagree; both say hotels keep roughly a third of revenue at the operating level.

Net margin after debt is much lower. Epos Now calls 10% to 20% net healthy. For an owner with a large mortgage, a weak year can wipe out owner cash entirely.

How do hotel owners pay themselves?

Owner-operators often take a manager's wage for running the property and treat leftover cash as profit. Investors who hire a management company take only distributions. The tax rules follow structure:

  • Sole proprietor or single-member LLC: there is no salary. The profit is your income, you take draws when cash allows, and you pay self-employment tax on it. The IRS puts that rate at 15.3%.
  • Partnership or multi-member LLC: the IRS says partners are not employees and should not get a W-2. You are paid through fixed partner payments set in the partnership agreement plus your share of profit.
  • S corporation: if you work in the business you must take reasonable compensation as W-2 wages before taking distributions. What comparable businesses pay for similar work is one of the factors the IRS lists.

How can a hotel owner earn more?

The usual levers:

  • Shift bookings from online travel agencies to direct bookings to save commission.
  • Schedule housekeeping to forecast occupancy rather than fixed shifts.
  • Refinance when rates allow; debt is the biggest swing in owner cash.
  • Add revenue from meeting space, parking or local partnerships.
  • Add income from work housekeeping and maintenance already do (below).

Amelia Robotics lists hotels among its priorities and pays businesses for approved first-person recordings of routine work, such as making beds, cleaning bathrooms and laundry. Amelia's typical pay is $500 to $2,000 a month per recording employee, assuming 12.5 to 50 approved hours a week; earnings vary, and your agreement and the approved recordings decide what is actually paid.

Illustrative example for four housekeepers recording part of their shifts: 4 housekeepers x 12.5 approved hours a week x 4 weeks x $10 = $2,000 a month, or $24,000 a year, at the typical rate. Amelia pays the business once a month with a statement, and you decide how much to share with the people who record.

Guest privacy comes first: recording is limited to agreed areas such as vacant rooms and back-of-house, and anything else is left out. See how this works for hotels.
