Most HVAC business owners take home roughly $35,000 to $150,000 a year. CertainPath, an HVAC contractor group, puts the average at $57,767, while Housecall Pro, using ZipRecruiter data, puts it at $86,197 for 2026. Owners of well-run companies with several crews can clear $200,000. What decides the number is net margin, not revenue: an average shop keeps 2.5% to 5% of sales, a well-run one 10% to 25%.
- Typical HVAC owner pay runs from about $35,000 to $150,000; the two most-cited averages are $57,767 (CertainPath) and $86,197 (ZipRecruiter via Housecall Pro).
- Margin decides pay. On $1 million of revenue, an average 2.5% to 5% margin leaves the owner $25,000 to $50,000.
- For context, a salaried HVAC technician earned a median of $61,010 in May 2025, per BLS.
How much does an HVAC business owner make?
Two credible estimates bracket the answer. CertainPath, which coaches residential HVAC, plumbing and electrical contractors, puts the average owner salary at $57,767 and says most owners fall between $35,000 and $75,000, with only about 2% earning over $100,000. Housecall Pro, using ZipRecruiter data, puts the 2026 national average at $86,197 and says most owners sit between $70,000 and $150,000.
They differ because they measure different things. ZipRecruiter-style figures come from job postings and self-reported pay, which lean toward established companies that hire general managers. CertainPath looks at what owners of ordinary shops actually take out. If you run a two-truck company, the lower figure is the more realistic benchmark; if you run five or more crews with a service manager, the higher one is.
A useful floor: a salaried HVAC technician earned a median of $61,010 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. An owner who works the trucks and takes home less than that is being paid less than an employee for more risk.

The table combines CertainPath's margin ranges with simple arithmetic. Owner take-home here means salary plus profit the owner keeps, before personal income tax. Treat the rows as a guide, not a forecast.
| Company revenue | Typical setup | Net profit at 2.5% to 5% (average shop) | Net profit at 10% to 25% (well-run shop) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $300,000 | Owner plus 1 to 2 techs | $7,500 to $15,000 plus the owner's own wage | $30,000 to $75,000 |
| $1,000,000 | 5 to 8 techs, owner mostly off the tools | $25,000 to $50,000 | $100,000 to $250,000 |
| $3,000,000 | Multiple crews, office staff, service manager | $75,000 to $150,000 | $300,000 to $750,000 |

What profit margin does an HVAC company make?
CertainPath says average HVAC companies run 2.5% to 5% net margins, while well-managed ones reach 10% to 25%, and that a $1 million company typically leaves its owner $25,000 to $50,000. The gap comes from pricing, how many calls each tech completes in a day, the share of replacement and maintenance-agreement work, and how much of the year the trucks sit idle between heating and cooling seasons.
Housecall Pro gives a worked example: a $1.2 million company at a 12% margin makes $144,000, and if the owner takes 40% of that, pay is $57,600. Lifting the margin to 18% raises the same owner's pay to $86,400 with no extra revenue.
How do HVAC owners pay themselves?
Housecall Pro notes many HVAC owners start by paying themselves 30% to 50% of net profit and keep the rest for taxes, equipment and slow months. How you take it depends on structure:
- Sole proprietor or single-member LLC: there is no salary. The profit is your income, you take draws when cash allows, and you pay self-employment tax on it. The IRS puts that rate at 15.3%.
- Partnership or multi-member LLC: the IRS says partners are not employees and should not get a W-2. You are paid through fixed partner payments set in the partnership agreement plus your share of profit.
- S corporation: if you work in the business you must take reasonable compensation as W-2 wages before taking distributions. What comparable businesses pay for similar work is one of the factors the IRS lists.
How can an HVAC owner raise their income?
The levers that move owner pay are the same ones that move margin:
- Price from real job costs, including drive time and callbacks, rather than matching the cheapest competitor.
- Sell maintenance agreements so shoulder seasons still have booked work.
- Track revenue per tech per day; one extra completed call a day across a crew changes the year.
- Collect at the job, not 30 days later. Late money is often what forces owners to skip their own pay.
- Add revenue lines that do not need more trucks or more hires (see the next section).
A new revenue line that uses work your crew already does
Amelia Robotics pays businesses for approved recordings of everyday work, filmed from the worker's view with a phone on a head mount and hands in frame, to train AI and robots. Amelia's typical pay is $500 to $2,000 a month per recording employee, assuming 12.5 to 50 approved hours a week; earnings vary, and your agreement and the approved recordings decide what is actually paid. Trades are one of its listed priorities.
Illustrative example for a small HVAC shop where three techs record routine installs and maintenance: 3 techs x 12.5 approved hours a week x 4 weeks x $10 = $1,500 a month, or $18,000 a year, at the typical rate. Amelia pays the business once a month with a statement, and you decide how much to share with the people who record.
That is not a replacement for margin work, but for a company whose owner takes home $25,000 to $50,000, it is a meaningful addition that needs no new trucks. You agree the tasks and can leave out customer homes or jobs where recording is not appropriate. See how this works for plumbing, HVAC and electrical crews.
