Data provenance is the documented history of a dataset: where each record came from, who created it, under what terms it was collected, and every transformation since. In AI licensing, provenance is how a buyer confirms the seller has the right to license the data.
Why it matters when licensing company data
Buyers ask provenance questions because training on data without clear rights creates legal risk that lasts as long as the model does. A company that can show which system each record came from, that it owns the records, and what customer or employee terms covered them has a stronger, more valuable dataset.
