## Quick answer

The average restaurant profit margin is about 3% to 5% of sales before tax. The National Restaurant Association puts a typical restaurant at roughly 5%, and its 2024 operator survey found medians of 2.8% for full-service and 4.0% for limited-service restaurants. Restaurant365 cites 3% to 5% for full service, 6% to 9% for fast casual and quick service, and 7% to 8% for catering. So yes, a restaurant can be profitable, but 42% of operators said theirs was not in 2025.

## Key points

- Typical pre-tax margin is about 5%; 2024 medians were 2.8% full-service and 4.0% limited-service (National Restaurant Association).
- Food and labor each take about 33 cents of every sales dollar; other costs about 29%.
- 42% of operators said their restaurant was not profitable in 2025.

## What is the average restaurant profit margin?

The [National Restaurant Association](https://restaurant.org/research-and-media/research/restaurant-economic-insights/analysis-commentary/elevated-costs-continue-to-pressure-restaurant-profitability/) estimates a typical restaurant's pre-tax profit margin at roughly 5%. Its [2025 Restaurant Operations Data Abstract](https://restaurant.org/research-and-media/research/restaurant-economic-insights/analysis-commentary/new-association-report-helps-operators-gauge-their-restaurant-performance/), based on an operator survey, found median pre-tax income of 2.8% of sales for full-service restaurants and 4.0% for limited-service restaurants in 2024. The Association notes the abstract is not meant as a target for any single restaurant.

Those are survey medians, so half of restaurants did better and half did worse. Industry software companies quote slightly wider ranges that line up with this once you allow for concept.

## Restaurant profit margin by type

Ranges compiled by [Restaurant365](https://www.restaurant365.com/blog/what-is-the-average-profit-margin-for-a-restaurant/), a restaurant accounting software company, alongside the Association's survey medians:

| Restaurant type | Typical net margin | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Full-service | 3% to 5% (2.8% median, 2024) | Higher labor for table service |
| Fast casual and quick service | 6% to 9% (4.0% limited-service median, 2024) | Fewer staff per sale, higher volume |
| Catering | 7% to 8% | Food ordered to known head counts, less waste |

## Where does a restaurant's money go?

According to the [National Restaurant Association](https://restaurant.org/research-and-media/research/restaurant-economic-insights/analysis-commentary/elevated-costs-continue-to-pressure-restaurant-profitability/), food and labor were the two largest line items, each about 33 cents of every sales dollar. Utilities, rent, supplies, repairs, admin and card fees together took about 29%. That leaves about 5 cents. It estimates the average restaurant's total expenses rose 36% between 2019 and 2026, about the same as menu prices rose, which is why margins have not widened.

A common planning rule cited by [7shifts](https://www.7shifts.com/blog/how-much-money-do-restaurant-owners-make/) is 30% food, 30% labor, 30% overhead and 10% profit. Few restaurants hit that 10% in practice, but it is a useful target to work back from.

## Is a restaurant business profitable?

Many are, but on thin margins that leave little room for mistakes. In the Association's survey, 42% of operators said their restaurant was not profitable in 2025. A full-service restaurant with $1 million in sales at the 2.8% median makes about $28,000 before tax, which is why one bad month, a broken walk-in or a rent increase can erase a year's profit.

What that means for the owner's own pay is covered in [how much restaurant owners make](https://origindatapartners.com/physical-ai/restaurant-owner-salary).

## How can a restaurant improve its profit margin?

On a 3% to 5% base, each point of cost saved can raise profit by a quarter or more:

- Cost every dish and reprice or retire items above your food-cost target.
- Schedule to hourly covers, not fixed shifts.
- Grow drinks, catering and private events, which carry better margins.
- Audit delivery commissions and card fees every year.
- Add revenue that does not depend on more covers (below).

## A new revenue line that uses work your crew already does

Amelia Robotics pays restaurants and commercial kitchens for approved first-person recordings of routine kitchen work, used to train AI and robots. Amelia's typical pay is $500 to $2,000 a month per recording employee, assuming 12.5 to 50 approved hours a week; earnings vary, and your agreement and the approved recordings decide what is actually paid.

Illustrative example for five kitchen staff recording prep: 5 cooks x 12.5 approved hours a week x 4 weeks x $10 = $2,500 a month, or $30,000 a year, at the typical rate. Amelia pays the business once a month with a statement, and you decide how much to share with the people who record.

Compared with the 2.8% full-service median, $30,000 a year equals the pre-tax profit on about $1,070,000 of food sales, without serving another cover. Results vary and depend on approval.
