## Quick answer

Most restaurant owners make about $45,500 to $100,000 a year, or roughly $3,800 to $8,300 a month, according to 7shifts' 2026 roundup; some take home under $20,000 and a few clear $300,000. Salary sites put the average between $65,811 (Indeed) and $97,173 (ZipRecruiter). The reason the range is so wide is margin: the National Restaurant Association puts a typical restaurant's pre-tax margin at about 5%, and its 2024 survey found a median of just 2.8% for full-service restaurants.

## Key points

- Typical restaurant owner pay is $45,500 to $100,000 a year; salary-site averages run from $65,811 to $97,173.
- A typical restaurant keeps about 5 cents of each sales dollar before tax; the 2024 full-service median was 2.8%.
- Employed food service managers earned a median of $69,390 in May 2025, and 31% of them are self-employed (BLS).

## How much does a restaurant owner make a year?

[7shifts](https://www.7shifts.com/blog/how-much-money-do-restaurant-owners-make/), a restaurant scheduling company, says most US restaurant owners earn $45,500 to $100,000 a year. It also lists three salary-site averages it checked: Indeed at $65,811, Payscale at $89,250 and ZipRecruiter at $97,173. These are aggregator estimates built from postings and self-reported pay, so they lean toward owners of established places.

The government data covers managers, not owners, but it is a fair yardstick. The [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/food-service-managers.htm) reports a median of $69,390 for food service managers in May 2025, with the lowest 10% under $45,960 and the top 10% over $107,640. About 31% of food service managers are self-employed, which in practice means many are owner-operators.

## How much does a restaurant owner make per month?

Dividing the typical annual range by 12 gives about $3,800 to $8,300 a month. In practice, few owners get a steady monthly figure. Restaurant income is uneven: a good summer can carry a slow winter, and many owners skip their own pay in a bad month to cover payroll and suppliers.

## Restaurant owner income by sales volume

The table applies the National Restaurant Association's margin figures to typical sales levels. It shows pre-tax profit before any owner salary is taken out, so it is an upper bound on what an owner who does not draw a wage could take.

| Annual sales | Profit at 2.8% (2024 full-service median) | Profit at 5% (NRA typical) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| $500,000 | $14,000 | $25,000 |
| $1,000,000 | $28,000 | $50,000 |
| $1,500,000 | $42,000 | $75,000 |
| $3,000,000 | $84,000 | $150,000 |

## Why restaurant owners make less than people expect

The [National Restaurant Association](https://restaurant.org/research-and-media/research/restaurant-economic-insights/analysis-commentary/elevated-costs-continue-to-pressure-restaurant-profitability/) says food and labor each take about 33 cents of every sales dollar, and other costs about 29%, leaving roughly 5% pre-tax for a typical restaurant. In its operator survey, 42% said their restaurant was not profitable in 2025. Its [2025 Operations Data Abstract](https://restaurant.org/research-and-media/research/restaurant-economic-insights/analysis-commentary/new-association-report-helps-operators-gauge-their-restaurant-performance/) found median pre-tax income of 2.8% of sales for full-service restaurants and 4.0% for limited-service in 2024. Many owners who appear to earn well are really paying themselves a manager's wage and calling it profit.

## How do restaurant owners pay themselves?

Owners who work in the restaurant usually take a fixed wage plus whatever profit is left at year end. The structure sets the taxes:

- Sole proprietor or single-member LLC: there is no salary. The profit is your income, you take draws when cash allows, and you pay self-employment tax on it. The [IRS](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/self-employment-tax-social-security-and-medicare-taxes) puts that rate at 15.3%.
- Partnership or multi-member LLC: [the IRS](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/paying-yourself) says partners are not employees and should not get a W-2. You are paid through fixed partner payments set in the partnership agreement plus your share of profit.
- S corporation: if you work in the business you must take [reasonable compensation](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/s-corporation-compensation-and-medical-insurance-issues) as W-2 wages before taking distributions. What comparable businesses pay for similar work is one of the factors the IRS lists.

## How can restaurant owners increase their income?

Small percentage changes matter because the margin is thin:

- Cost every menu item and reprice or drop the ones that run high food cost.
- Schedule labor to actual covers by hour, not habit.
- Push higher-margin lines such as drinks, catering and private events.
- Review recurring fees, from delivery commissions to card processing.
- Add income from kitchen work already being done (below).

## A new revenue line that uses work your crew already does

Amelia Robotics pays restaurants and commercial kitchens for approved recordings of routine prep and cooking, filmed from the cook's point of view with hands in frame, to train AI and robots. Amelia's typical pay is $500 to $2,000 a month per recording employee, assuming 12.5 to 50 approved hours a week; earnings vary, and your agreement and the approved recordings decide what is actually paid.

Illustrative example for four kitchen staff recording prep shifts: 4 cooks x 12.5 approved hours a week x 4 weeks x $10 = $2,000 a month, or $24,000 a year, at the typical rate. Amelia pays the business once a month with a statement, and you decide how much to share with the people who record.

For a $1 million restaurant at the 2.8% full-service median, $24,000 a year would be close to its whole pre-tax profit, which shows how much a non-food revenue line can matter. Earnings vary and depend on approval. See [how this works in restaurant kitchens](https://origindatapartners.com/physical-ai/restaurants-kitchens).
