## Quick answer

Most electrical business owners make about $60,000 to $150,000 a year, according to salary-site data compiled by Housecall Pro in 2026; owners of large, established contractors can earn $200,000 or more. Specialty trade contractors, which include electrical firms, averaged a 7.7% pre-tax net margin in CFMA's 2025 benchmark, and that margin, plus how much the owner still bills, sets the final number.

## Key points

- Typical electrical owner pay is $60,000 to $150,000; large established firms can pay $200,000+.
- An employed electrician earned a median of $63,190 in May 2025 (BLS), and about 7% of electricians are self-employed.
- Specialty trade contractors averaged 7.7% pre-tax net margin in CFMA's 2025 Construction Financial Benchmarker.

## How much does an electrical business owner make?

[Housecall Pro](https://www.housecallpro.com/resources/electrician-business-owner-salary/) puts electrician business owners at $60,000 to $150,000 a year, with owners of large, established companies at $200,000 or more. The guide says its numbers are compiled from salary sites such as ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor, so they reflect reported pay rather than audited profit.

For a reference point, the [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/construction-and-extraction/electricians.htm) reports a median wage of $63,190 for electricians in May 2025. Solo electrical contractors often earn close to that in their early years, because the profit above a wage goes back into vans, tools, licensing and insurance.

## What decides how much an electrical contractor owner takes home?

Four things explain most of the spread:

- Owner role: an owner still pulling wire bills their own hours but caps the company's size; an owner who estimates, sells and manages can run several crews.
- Work mix: service and small commercial work usually carries better margin than competitively bid new construction.
- Region: union rates, licensing rules and local demand move both wages and prices.
- Margin: the same revenue can pay an owner $45,000 or $150,000 depending on overhead and pricing.

## What profit margin do electrical contractors make?

The best broad benchmark is CFMA's 2025 Construction Financial Benchmarker. As summarised by [Bridgit](https://gobridgit.com/blog/profit-margin-in-construction/), specialty trade contractors averaged a 7.7% pre-tax net margin, against 6.7% for all 1,558 contractors in the sample and 12.0% for the top quarter. Smaller service-focused electrical shops can run higher or lower than that, depending on pricing.

[Housecall Pro](https://www.housecallpro.com/resources/electrician-business-owner-salary/) gives a simple example: a company with $600,000 of revenue at a 15% margin makes $90,000 of net profit; if the owner takes half, their pay is $45,000 and the rest is reinvested.

| Annual revenue | Net profit at 7.7% (CFMA specialty average) | Net profit at 12% (CFMA top quarter) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| $500,000 | $38,500 | $60,000 |
| $1,500,000 | $115,500 | $180,000 |
| $5,000,000 | $385,000 | $600,000 |

## How do electrical business owners pay themselves?

Owner pay is usually a mix of wages for field or office work and a share of profit. Structure decides the tax treatment:

- Sole proprietor or single-member LLC: there is no salary. The profit is your income, you take draws when cash allows, and you pay self-employment tax on it. The [IRS](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/self-employment-tax-social-security-and-medicare-taxes) puts that rate at 15.3%.
- Partnership or multi-member LLC: [the IRS](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/paying-yourself) says partners are not employees and should not get a W-2. You are paid through fixed partner payments set in the partnership agreement plus your share of profit.
- S corporation: if you work in the business you must take [reasonable compensation](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/s-corporation-compensation-and-medical-insurance-issues) as W-2 wages before taking distributions. What comparable businesses pay for similar work is one of the factors the IRS lists.

## How can an electrical contractor increase owner pay?

The practical levers:

- Track job costs on every job and reprice the job types that lose money.
- Grow service and maintenance contracts, which smooth cash flow between projects.
- Hire an estimator or lead so the owner's time goes to selling and pricing.
- Keep change orders billed as they happen, not at closeout.
- Add a revenue line that uses existing crew time (below).

## A new revenue line that uses work your crew already does

Amelia Robotics pays businesses for approved head-mounted recordings of skilled work, which AI and robotics labs use for training. Amelia's typical pay is $500 to $2,000 a month per recording employee, assuming 12.5 to 50 approved hours a week; earnings vary, and your agreement and the approved recordings decide what is actually paid.

Illustrative example for three electricians recording panel work, terminations and shop prep: 3 electricians x 20 approved hours a week x 4 weeks x $10 = $2,400 a month, or $28,800 a year, at the typical rate. Amelia pays the business once a month with a statement, and you decide how much to share with the people who record.

Set against CFMA's 7.7% average margin, $28,800 a year is the profit on roughly $370,000 of revenue. Customer sites and sensitive areas can be excluded.
