## Quick answer

Most independent barbershop owners make about $60,000 to $110,000 a year, or $5,000 to $9,000 a month, according to Vagaro's 2026 guide. Solo owner-operators typically take home $45,000 to $85,000, while multi-chair shops can produce $100,000 to $200,000 or more for the owner. For comparison, employed barbers earned a median of $18.37 an hour including tips in May 2025, and about 80% of barbers are self-employed.

## Key points

- Solo barbershop owners usually take home $45,000 to $85,000; multi-chair shops $100,000 to $200,000+.
- Margins fall as shops grow: 55% to 70% for a solo chair, 15% to 25% for a staffed multi-chair shop.
- About 80% of barbers are self-employed, and the median barber wage was $18.37 an hour with tips (BLS, May 2025).

## How much does a barbershop owner make?

[Vagaro](https://www.vagaro.com/learn/how-much-do-barbershop-owners-make), which sells booking software to shops, says most independent barbershop owners land between $5,000 and $9,000 a month in personal income after expenses, roughly $60,000 to $110,000 a year. Solo owner-operators typically take home $45,000 to $85,000, and multi-chair shops produce $100,000 to $200,000 or more. Treat these as an industry estimate; there is no government survey of shop owners specifically.

The [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/personal-care-and-service/barbers-hairstylists-and-cosmetologists.htm) data shows how common ownership is: about 80% of barbers are self-employed. The median barber earned $18.37 an hour in May 2025, tips included. Many "shop owners" are one barber with one chair.

## Booth rent or commission: which pays the owner more?

In a booth-rental shop the owner collects a flat fee per chair, often $200 to $400 a week according to [Vagaro](https://www.vagaro.com/learn/how-much-do-barbershop-owners-make), and each barber keeps their own takings. Income is predictable and management is light, but the ceiling is the number of chairs times the rent.

In a commission shop the owner keeps a share of every cut and pays the barbers as staff or contractors. Revenue is higher and so is the risk: a slow week still has payroll. That is why margins drop from 55% to 70% for a solo chair to 15% to 25% for a staffed shop, even though owner income rises.

## How do barbershop owners pay themselves?

Most owners pay themselves from their own chair and take shop profit on top. Structure decides the taxes:

- Sole proprietor or single-member LLC: there is no salary. The profit is your income, you take draws when cash allows, and you pay self-employment tax on it. The [IRS](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/self-employment-tax-social-security-and-medicare-taxes) puts that rate at 15.3%.
- Partnership or multi-member LLC: [the IRS](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/paying-yourself) says partners are not employees and should not get a W-2. You are paid through fixed partner payments set in the partnership agreement plus your share of profit.
- S corporation: if you work in the business you must take [reasonable compensation](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/s-corporation-compensation-and-medical-insurance-issues) as W-2 wages before taking distributions. What comparable businesses pay for similar work is one of the factors the IRS lists.

## How can a barbershop owner make more?

What usually moves owner income:

- Raise prices in small steps; a few dollars per cut goes almost straight to profit.
- Fill empty chairs, whether with renters or commissioned barbers.
- Take deposits to cut no-shows.
- Sell grooming products from the chair.
- Add income from work the barbers already do (below).

## A new revenue line that uses work your crew already does

Amelia Robotics lists hair salons and barbershops among its priorities. It pays businesses for approved first-person recordings of hands-on work such as fades, shaves and line-ups. Amelia's typical pay is $500 to $2,000 a month per recording employee, assuming 12.5 to 50 approved hours a week; earnings vary, and your agreement and the approved recordings decide what is actually paid.

Illustrative example for a two-chair shop: 2 barbers x 12.5 approved hours a week x 4 weeks x $10 = $1,000 a month, or $12,000 a year, at the typical rate. Amelia pays the business once a month with a statement, and you decide how much to share with the people who record.

In a booth-rental shop, renters are independent, so they would take part by agreement. Clients are only recorded with their agreement. See [how this works in salons and barbershops](https://origindatapartners.com/physical-ai/salons-barbershops).
