## Quick answer

Yes. Hedge funds and other money managers buy "alternative data": records from outside company financial statements that show how businesses are performing before they report. They spent $2.8 billion on it in 2025, up 17% from the year before, according to consultancy Neudata as reported by Business Insider. The datasets that sell are aggregated transaction, order, shipment and usage records that say something about public companies, with several years of history and regular updates. The main risk is securities law: in 2021 the SEC's first case against an alternative data seller ended with more than $10 million in settlements, because the seller used confidential customer data in ways it had promised not to.

## Key points

- Funds pay for signals about listed companies, so your records must say something about brands, retailers or industries that trade.
- Funds test data against past results before buying, so several years of consistent history is the norm.
- Use only data your customer contracts allow, aggregated and anonymised as promised. Misrepresenting that is securities fraud.

## What hedge funds buy, and why

Money managers have long used credit-card receipts and satellite images of retailers' car parks to get an edge, and that kind of data is becoming standard, [Business Insider reported](https://www.businessinsider.com/hedge-fund-spending-on-alternative-data-jumps-2025-2026-2) in February 2026. Spending reached $2.8 billion in 2025, more than double the 2021 level, according to Neudata.

Use is widespread. In a [Coalition Greenwich](https://www.greenwich.com/market-structure-technology/beyond-feed-strategies-alternative-data-providers-ai-era) study, 75% of investors had built alternative data into their research process, 46% used it in portfolio construction and 63% planned to increase spending.

What funds want is early evidence of revenue, demand or costs at companies they can trade. A private company's operating records can provide that when they cover enough of a market.

## Which private companies hold data funds want

The common thread is records that count activity at, or on behalf of, many other businesses.

| Company type | Data | What it signals to a fund |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Payment processors, POS and billing software | Aggregated transaction counts and value by merchant or brand | Retail and restaurant sales before earnings |
| Distributors and wholesalers | Order volume by brand or product line | Demand for listed manufacturers and brands |
| Freight brokers, 3PLs and carriers | Shipment volumes, lanes and rates | Industrial activity and retailer inventory |
| B2B software platforms | Aggregated usage or integrations by vendor | Adoption of listed software companies |
| Job boards, staffing and HR platforms | Postings and hires by employer | Hiring, expansion or cuts |
| Marketplaces, review and pricing sites | Prices, listings and reviews by brand | Pricing power and product demand |
| Property managers and rental platforms | Rents and occupancy | Real estate trusts and homebuilders |

## What makes a dataset sellable to funds

- It maps to public companies: records tagged by brand or company name that can be matched to stock tickers.
- History: funds backtest a dataset against past results before they buy, so years of consistent records matter.
- A stable panel: the same sources over time. If your customer base changed sharply, trends can reflect that, not the market.
- Timeliness: data delivered weekly or faster is worth more than a quarterly file.
- No personal data: funds want aggregated counts, not individuals.
- Documented sourcing: fund compliance teams ask how every record was obtained and under what permissions. The industry body FISD publishes the [factors they check](https://fisd.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/FISD-Alternative-Data-Identification-Factors-11.1.22.pdf).

## How it differs from licensing to AI companies

The same records can go to both kinds of buyer, but they want different things from them.

| What differs | AI developers | Hedge funds and asset managers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What they want | Depth: full records showing how work gets done | Signals: counts and trends about other companies |
| Form | De-identified records, often a one-time copy | Aggregated time series, usually an ongoing feed |
| Pricing | Often a one-time fee, sometimes with update payments | Usually a recurring license for continued delivery |
| History needed | Years of records, for variety | Years of records, for backtesting |
| Main legal frame | Privacy, confidentiality and copyright | Securities law and confidentiality, plus privacy |

## The securities-law check that matters most

In 2021 the SEC brought its first enforcement action against an alternative data seller. App Annie sold estimates of mobile app downloads and revenue to trading firms. It had promised the app companies that shared confidential data that their data would be aggregated and anonymised before use. [The SEC found](https://www.sec.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2021-176) that from late 2014 to mid-2018 it used non-aggregated, non-anonymised data to make its estimates more valuable to trading firms, and misled those firms about how the estimates were made. The company and its founder agreed to pay more than $10 million.

The lesson for a seller is to sell only what your agreements with customers allow, in the form you promised them, and to describe your method to buyers accurately. Funds will ask, and their compliance teams send detailed questionnaires before buying.

- Read customer contracts and privacy notices for limits on sharing or selling their data, even aggregated.
- Aggregate and anonymise so that no customer's own figures can be backed out.
- Exclude anything obtained under a confidentiality obligation that does not allow this use.
- Keep a written description of how the dataset is built, and keep it true when the method changes.

## How to start

List the datasets that count activity at other businesses, especially listed ones. Pull a sample covering several years, write a data dictionary (the [dictionary template](https://origindatapartners.com/blog/company-data-dictionary-template) gives the columns) and have counsel review your customer agreements before any buyer sees it. To reach buyers, compare [data scouts, matchmaking events and marketplaces](https://origindatapartners.com/guides/sell-data-to-hedge-funds-platforms). Funds usually buy on a recurring license, so read [recurring revenue from data licensing](https://origindatapartners.com/blog/data-licensing-recurring-revenue) and [B2B data monetization](https://origindatapartners.com/guides/b2b-data-monetization) for how those deals are structured.

## Questions and answers

### What is alternative data?

Information about companies or the economy from outside financial statements and official statistics, such as card transactions, shipment volumes, web prices, app usage and satellite images. Investors use it to see trends before companies report.

### Who buys alternative data?

Hedge funds and other investment managers are the main buyers, spending $2.8 billion in 2025. Private equity firms, corporates and consultants also buy. See [where to sell data to hedge funds](https://origindatapartners.com/guides/sell-data-to-hedge-funds-platforms) for how sellers reach them.

### Can a private company sell its data to hedge funds?

Yes, if the data says something about companies funds can trade and your agreements allow it. Payment, distribution, freight, software-usage, hiring and pricing records are the usual sources, sold aggregated and with several years of history.

### What kind of data do hedge funds buy?

Alternative data: records outside financial statements, such as card transactions, shipment volumes, app and software usage, job postings, web prices and satellite images. Funds use it to estimate company performance before earnings.

### How much do hedge funds spend on alternative data?

Hedge funds and other money managers spent $2.8 billion on alternative data in 2025, up 17% from 2024 and more than double the 2021 level, according to Neudata as reported by Business Insider.

### Is selling data to hedge funds legal?

Yes, but securities law adds risk that AI licensing does not. In the SEC's first case against an alternative data seller, App Annie and its founder paid more than $10 million for using confidential customer data in ways they had promised not to and misleading trading firms about it.

### Can the same data be licensed to AI companies too?

Often, yes, as long as neither license is exclusive. AI developers usually want detailed records, while funds want aggregated time series, so the two can coexist. Check exclusivity clauses before signing either.
